Origins GinZing Energy-boosting Moisturizer

If you read my last blog post you'll already know that I love Origins. Their brand is all about searching the globe to find wonderful natural ingredients to incorporate into their products. I have naturally oily skin so when I moisturize I want something that's going to sink into my skin pretty quickly and not feel thick or oily. About two years ago I bought a value set from Sephora that included a limited edition 2.5oz (I think) tub of the Origins GinZing Energy-boosting Moisturizer ($27.50 for 1.7oz at Sephora). I loved it so much that when the holidays rolled around last year I bought the Origins Bestsellers kit ($45 for 6 generous sample sized products at Sephora) that included a 1oz size of this moisturizer and other products that I'm still trying out. If you guys want to snag this it's surprisingly still available on the Sephora website. It is limited edition though so get it while you can! I'll be sure to let you know how I like the other products as well.
It took me until about a month ago to use up the large jar of the moisturizer. It lasted quite a long time - probably around one and a half to two years! I've used this product once every morning and find it's a great way to start the day. As you may have guessed by the name and the color of the container, it includes citrus ingredients. If you really don't like citrus, you honestly probably won't like this product. The scent doesn't linger on your skin at all though it is definitely noticeable during application.
The two main active ingredients are coffee beans which aid in anti-aging and provide a boost of energy, and ginseng, which stimulates your skin as well as your brain. This GinZing Moisturizer also has Lemon Peel Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Orange Peel Oil, Shea Butter, Jojoba Butter, Chestnut Seed Extract, etc. If you take a look at the ingredients list you'll notice the first handful of ingredients don't appear to be plant-based though they all have a safety rating of 1 out of 10 (1 being the safest) on the Environmental Working Group's website database (www.ewg.org). Some ingredients that may be considered iffy are Dimethicone (moderate concern for organ toxicity), Tocopheryl acetate (moderate concern as skin toxicant or allergen), and Phenoxyethanol (moderate concern as irritant and organ toxicity). Every other non-botanical ingredient has a score of 1-2 which is considered low or no hazard. This moisturizer is free of parabens, sulfates, and phtalates which is really important. An important thing to note is that even though a couple of these ingredients may be listed as a moderate hazard, there are still some data gaps. Overall, this product, though not as natural as some, is still quite natural.
As I mentioned earlier, I don't like moisturizers that are thick. Basically, I don't want to feel like I have anything on my skin. The first jumbo sized moisturizer I used was less like a cream or lotion and more like a gel. It wasn't completely opaque and when you put a small amount on your finger it appeared almost clear. I LOVED this formula. It was the perfect amount of heaviness and melted into my skin beautifully. It wore well under makeup and kept my skin nicely moisturized. Once I finished that jar I moved onto the smaller one. As you can see by the below picture, the moisturizer in this jar is completely opaque and and more like a lotion or cream. After comparing the jars side by side to see if they were in fact different products and also doing some research, I came to the conclusion that Origins changed their formula. I do prefer the gel consistency considering my skin type though still really love this moisturizer. I notice it takes longer to sink into my skin but not by much. I haven't noticed any difference in the efficacy after the formula change.
If your skin is on the drier side this may not be a potent enough moisturizer. It's marketed as a lightweight, oil-free facial cream that moisturizes and revitalizes your skin to give you a healthy glow. Origins recommends using this twice a day though I only use it in the morning. At night I use my Sunday Riley products, as you'll know from my other blog post. In the bestsellers kit there is a 1oz sample of their High Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral Enriched Renewal Cream that is a heavier consistency more suitable for dry to normal or combo skin. Once the colder, drier winter months roll around I'm planning to give this product a try so stay tuned for that.
Ultimately, despite the change in formula I would still recommend the GinZing Moisturizer to anyone with any skin type. Even now, two years later, I look forward to putting on this moisturizer every morning. It's cooling on the skin and the scent is refreshing.
